Its research activities have helped to make the school an international leader not only in terms of its Aerospace Engineering program but also its post-graduate programs including its masters (MSc) and doctoral programs in engineering sciences. Therefore, many international key players in research visit their conterparts at ISAE-SUPAERO. We have met Dan Sheeres a University of Colorado Distinguished Professor and the A. Richard Seebass Chair in the Ann and H.J. Smead Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. Dan Scheeres’ research spans the topics of astrodynamics and spacecraft navigation to planetary science and celestial mechanics, and has published extensively in these fields. Asteroid 8887 is named “Scheeres” in recognition of his contributions to the scientific understanding of the dynamical environment about asteroids. During his time at ISAE-SUPAERO, Prof. Scheeres and the Space Systems for Planetary Applications team collaborated on analyses of DART data and the development of concepts to probe the internal structure of asteroids during future space missions. Moreover, Dan Scheeres and ISAE-SUPAERO have jointly published several articles in “Nature” about asteroids and the DART mission. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05810-5 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05878-z Learn more about Dan Scheeres : https://www.colorado.edu/aerospace/daniel-scheeres Learn more about DART : https://www.isae-supaero.fr/en/videos/the-dart-mission-reached-its-target-explanations-from-dr-naomi-murdoch/ International 3 April 2023 International day 2023 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter International 3 April 2023 International day 2023 As the world leader in higher education in the field of aerospace engineering, ISAE-SUPAERO has made international openness a priority. Indeed, our campus welcomes 40 % of new international students each year. The richness of the 66 nationalities present is one of the strengths of our school. For its third edition, the international day was transformed into an international week. Organised by the international club and the international relations department, this event aims to celebrate the diversity of cultures and to share a convivial moment between staff and students from all horizons. On the programme : sport, cinema, games, music, gastronomy, oenology, calligraphy, henna, literature, photography... everyone was able to discover a bit of the daily life of our international students. ISAE-SUPAERO / SapienSapienS The Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) machine allows the Department of Mechanics of Structures and Materials (DMSM) to design and qualify parts obtained by additive manufacturing processes. The department sets up instrumentation to improve part quality and process reliability. This year has seen the start of research work, supported by the Occitanie region, on the instrumentation and monitoring of the LMD process. The activity step up in 2023 with the start of projects on the repair of high added value aeronautical parts and the development of multi-materials. ISAE-SUPAERO / SapienSapienS The EMpEROR platform was born on the one hand, from the increasing consideration of aeroelastic phenomena in modern aeronautics, and on the other hand, from the synergy between the Aerodynamics, Energetics, and Propulsion (DAEP) and Structural Mechanics and Materials (DMSM) departments. This platform has been designed and thought out to allow great modularity of metrology, around a rotor bench allowing to rotate from 1 to 6 blades, up to 1 meter in diameter, from 0 to 3000 rpm, and this in complete safety thanks to a 6-meter-long protective cage. It is equipped with several sensors for performance measurements, but also with a rotating vibrometry system for measuring the dynamics of the blades (this system is only used by two laboratories in Europe). The bench also makes it possible to embed measurement systems in the blades, but also in the coming months, systems to control these unstable phenomena. Since 2020, this platform has also enabled two thesis students to work on aeroelastic phenomena, as well as 6 Master’s students. This platform also makes it possible to generate experimental databases used by ISAE-SUPAERO researchers to compare and validate their computer codes. The equipment will increase in power in 2024 with the addition of the possibility of making Laser measurements, of the PIV or/and LDV type, as well as the possibility of manufacturing more complex blades with the hand on the flexibility of these. ISAE-SUPAERO’s the “Autonomous Systems” Platform! ISAE-SUPAERO / SapienSapienS The “Autonomous Systems” Platform gathers the various tools and means, both software and robotics, provided by the DISC technical team to the researchers of ISAE-SUPAERO. This platform is composed of an evolution area of 10 × 10 × 4 m equipped with a motion capture system, where various mobile ground or air robots can move, as well as a dozen of development and control stations. This evolution area has a modular semi-urban environment that can be modified according to the different projects or tests to be carried out. The platform is used for the development of demonstrators allowing to highlight the various research projects of the ISAE-SUPAERO researchers, as well as for teaching through practical works which are carried out initially in simulation, then on the real robots. ISAE-SUPAERO / SapienSapienS ISAE-SUPAERO - as a center for training through #research, research training and innovation - has many research equipments used within its 6 research departments. Today, we present the land mobile robots! Whether robots, planes, cars, or even telephones, all of these technologies are equipped with perception systems. Depending on the application, these sources of information make it possible to perceive the environment in which a system evolves but also to measure its own characteristics, such as for example its velocity or its acceleration. This multitude of data must then be used, cross-referenced and interpreted within what is called the navigation system to obtain the positioning of the vehicle but also, in the case of mapping applications, that of the objects which surround it. Within the NAVIRRES (Navigation, Radar, and Remote Sensing) team of the DEOS, researchers are interested in navigation systems and their application in complex environments where sensor information can be degraded, erroneous or even unavailable. Thus, mobile acquisition platforms are developed, equipped with cameras, lidars, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers, radars and inertial measurement units, with the aim of obtaining the most efficient navigation system possible, according to the intended application. One of the research topics of the team concerns the analysis of the degradation of information from sensors, which leads to the development of new robust and adaptive algorithms, making it possible to overcome environmental constraints. The ultimate goal is to make navigation systems more precise and safer, for critical applications requiring strong reliability, such as autonomous cars or exploration robotics. ISAE-SUPAERO / SapienSapienS The PRISE project (Platform for Research and Engineering for Embedded Systems) was born in 2007 from an internal initiative at ISAE-SUPAERO to build a platform for research and engineering in the field of embedded systems. The PRISE room has been created to (1) provide a support environment for teaching on software-intensive embedded systems and (2) a test bench platform for research activities combining modeling, analysis and design of complex embedded systems as well as the integration of new functionalities (such as artificial intelligence algorithm embeddability). The PRISE platform integrates several prototypes and demonstrators such as the SMARTIES flight simulator combining an advanced simulation architecture (flight dynamics, sensors, motors, etc.) and a reproduction of an avionics system for flight control (auto-pilot, data fusion, ...) or FACTORING the prototype of a ring Ethernet network (as opposed to a classic star-type Ethernet network) allowing optimizations and implementations for new network architectures. 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | ... | 15
