Workshop EM Radar signatures

 18 novembre 2010, Toulouse, France

Deadline to send the solutions: October 15, 2010

Initiated by DGA and Industrials Societies in 1990, the Workshop is reserved to Industrials, Defence organizations, Public and Private Laboratories involved in the design of Radar and Targets.

The themes:

The themes are Defence and Civilian topics: RCS, Targets and antennas designs, EMC, …

The idea:

The idea is to highlight predictive and validated computational tools to compare and federate current works on reference problems.

The aim:

The aim is to obtain “very careful validation and reference results”.

Additional objectives are:

  • to conduct works on ill-resolved problems,
  • to compare the different methods,
  • to assess the existing codes,
  • to know the “ state of the Art ”

To participate at the WORKSHOP EM ISAE 2010:

One must solve at least one complete test case, which must also be accepted by the Scientific Committee of the Workshop. The solutions will be sent to the two Scientific Secretaries.

Computations and tests funding are supported by participants. Results remain speaker’s property and can only be conveyed to participants attending the Workshop.

The WORKSHOP will be held at:

Institut Supérieur Aéronautique et Espace  (Campus ENSICA)
1, place Emile Blouin - TOULOUSE

Test cases:

Introduction

The problems could be solved by different methods to be chosen by each participant.

Each participants are invited to provide a short report with the method(s) used to solve the problems and ASCII files of the required results to the scientific secretaries before October 15.

During the workshop, the test-cases will be presented by the Chairmen and followed by an open discussion with the participants on the theoretical background and the qualities of the method used (parameters, convergence, time, number of iterations, etc.).

Some data files (CAD, mesh) are available. If any, participants are invited to provided its to the Chairmen for the other participants.

1. WAVEGUIDE FILTER

Chairmen: (Thales), (ONERA)

This test case concerns the simulation of the reflection and transmission coefficient of a wave guide filter. The filter is composed of three cylindrical cavities each of one including the presence of screws. The cavities are coupled by 2 iris, output and input being standard.

2. NEAR FIELD RCS CYLINDER

Chairmen: (CEA/CESTA), (DGA/MRIS)

This test case concerns the near field RCS simulation of a perfectly conducting cylinder. The illumination is modelized by an array of four electric dipoles. Two calculations are required: the near field RCS simulation of the cylinder and the near field RCS simulation of the calibration object. The results of these simulations will be compared to the measurement results realised at the CEA-CESTA facilities.

3. Antenna Insulation using High Impedance Surface

Chairmen: (Orange Labs), (Dassault Aviation)

The objective is to evaluate the use of a High Impedance Surface on the mutual coupling between two printed patches. The HIS is composed by an array of mushroom cells inserted between the two patches. Two cases without and with the HIS must be simulated.

4. Photonic Radome

Chairmen: (EADS Innovation Works), (MBDA)

The photonic radome is a Frequency Selective Surface (FSS), made of 19 metallic strips placed on the surface of a sphere. We define two configurations with continuous or discontinuous strips, and compute the E field at the center of the sphere created by a plane wave illumination. More specifically, we are interested in the attenuation of this field due to the cuts in the strips.

5. Rough Surface RCS

Chairmen: (DGA/Maitrise de l'information), (IEEA)

The objective of this problem is the calculation of a rough surface radar cross section. A sample has been manufactured and measured. The calculation results will consequently be compared to the measurement results.

6.  Cylinder with Cavity

Chairmen: (DGA/MRIS), (Thales)

This test case considers a cavity filled with air and shaped in a perfectly electrical conducting cylinder (the geometry is the same than the geometry of the EM ISAE Workshop 2008, test case 2, target 2).
The requested results are the Monostatic Radar Cross Section of the target from frequencies 5 GHz to 18 GHz, with a step of 0,1 GHz and the parallel component of the field at the centre of the cylinder.

7.  Dielectric Cube

Chairmen: (Dassault Aviation), (FGAN)

The objective is to compute mono-static RCS and ISAR image of a dielectric cube. The ISAR image will be computed using the same processing tool in order to avoid the influence of the signal processing on the results comparison.
