Satellite systems have unique capabilities in terms of provision of broadcast/multicast services over wide coverage. Satellite networks are also attractive to complement terrestrial solutions to deliver a range of new communication services (internet access, mobile communications and broadcasting…) in areas where implementation of terrestrial infrastructures is not economically viable because for instance of small user density. For all these reasons, satellite communications are experiencing a renewed interest from services providers and industry.
The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers and experts from academia and industry, active in the field of satellite communication systems to discuss the current status, the technical challenges, the latest research results, and the foreseen evolution of services and standards. A global vision is available thanks to the participation of authors from the different regions of the world, including Asia (12%), and North and South America (5%).
The IWSSC 2008 technical programme is of high interest, and includes four tutorial, fifteen technical sessions, a panel session with the participation of international experts. The scope of the workshop covers a wide range of technical challenges to push satellite communications towards new frontiers, so as to provide efficient fixed or mobile broadband access and broadcast services, possibly with hybrid satellite and terrestrial networks or seamless integration with terrestrial infrastructures.
Tutorials are organised on the first day of the conference and offer you the opportunity to refresh and update your knowledge on mobile channel modelling, satellite based constellation networks, encapsulation concepts…
The Technical Sessions topics range from physical layer (channel modelling and fade mitigation techniques, antennas, modulation and coding, synchronisation…) to satellite networking (radio resource management, transport layer protocols, IPv6…). Dedicated PhD sessions offer young researchers the opportunity to discuss their findings and liase with students from other research groups to foster integration of European satellite communications research activities.
Three Special Sessions give a thorough view on selected subjects thanks to sets of co-ordinated papers: (ETSI broadband satellite multimedia, past, present and future, OURSES project: medical services in rural areas using new satellite communication technologies, and IPv6 networking for satellites, the SATSIX experience)
The Panel Session is gathering executives from industry, satellite operators and space agencies to discuss new developments and challenges in satellite communications technologies, emerging services and applications. You will be surprised nicely by the unusual composition of the panel.
Last but not the least, the high ranking Keynote and Invited Speakers will give you the latest developments on satellite communications programmes and initiatives of the European and Indian Space Agencies and their visions of the future.
Providing our workshop with extraordinary surroundings, Toulouse prides itself on its vibrant high-tech community and is the centre for aerospace higher education, research and industry in Europe. This is a very unique location for this workshop, providing the opportunity to network with your peers and colleagues from academia, research and industry.
Enjoy your participation to IWSSC 2008!
